This photo represents the two path ways Pip has to choose from. He can either fight the up hill battle to become a gentleman to impress Estella and follow that dream of his or go through with being a blacksmith with Joe. Choosing to be a gentleman would be going against everything in society that says he is a common boy and will not be easy for him. This is shown from the arrow pointing the down when all Pip wants is to be up with the higher classes people. On the other hand if he goes through with being a blacksmith he will have the hard ship of being common and not having Estella's attention or approval that he so desperately wants. The tumbling rocks sign represents Pips own personal conflict of not being able to be with Estella.
